The department of Studies in Sociology was established in the academic year 2011 at the main campus of Vijayanagara Sri Krishnadevaraya University, Ballari. The Department started with 28 students, now around 250 students has awarded degree in sociology. To comprehend and study the current existing social phenomena and issues among the minds of young scholars, the department has started Ph.D. Degree from the academic year 2013-14 with well equipped infrastructure and qualified teaching and non-teaching staffs. The current curriculum is designed to expose students to the modern society by enhancing their skills and ability to fetch jobs. In addition to teaching, the department has established a good research atmosphere.

4 Assistant Professors has been awarded Ph.D degrees and are expertise in different areas of research such as Education and Society, Crime and Deviance, Social Issues etc. The research papers of faculties have been presented at state, national and international conferences and seminars across country, and about 75 research articles and books have been published in reputed journals. Since 2014, 13 Ph.D students have been enrolled to the Department, among them 3 students has awarded Ph.D degree and focusing on major social issues like community studies, gender studies, family and marital affairs, and so on. Alumnus of the department have been placed in government, semi-government and private institutions in the administration, defense, health, education, business, social service sectors and so on. Teaching in Post-graduation enlights the logical thinking, analytical and social skills among the students and moral values to work in various organizations in future. The department is well equipped with modern technological .
facilities like lecture room, computer, LCD projectors and Wifi.
The benefits of government projects are being provided to the students to gain field research experience. Within a span of short time, the department has achieved milestones in inviting eminent subject experts from various universities and NGOs in the country to deliver lectures in ‘special lecture series’ and ‘Gender Sensitization’ workshops on key issues. At present, Zilla Panchayat of Bellary district has assigned a task to the department under the banner of Mahatma Gandhi NAREGA scheme, to do the social assessment report on the completion of soak-pit programme which launched in different taluks of the district. A research team consists of Professors, research scholars and Post graduate students has undergone field work, prepared and submitted the Social Impact Assessment reports.
